Lidl Maynooth – Ireland’s First Net Zero Energy Supermarket
Delivery of Ireland’s first Net Zero Energy supermarket through integrated M&E design and sustainability consultancy.
Overview: Delivering a Retail First for Ireland
Lidl’s vision for the country’s first net zero energy supermarket required a partner capable of combining innovative engineering, sustainability expertise, and commercial understanding. Lawler Consulting, working alongside Lawler Sustainability, supported Lidl from concept to completion—ensuring the new Maynooth store not only set a national precedent, but also provided tangible long-term value for Lidl, its customers, and the local community.
Client Objectives
Lidl sought to:
- Create a net zero energy flagship that would lead the retail sector
- Reduce long-term operational and energy costs
- Demonstrate leadership in sustainability to customers and stakeholders
- Enhance the in-store experience through better comfort, lighting, and air quality
- Ensure the solution was replicable for future Lidl developments
Our role was to translate these ambitions into a practical, buildable, and commercially viable design.
Our Contribution: Engineering & Sustainability Working as One
1 – Intelligent M&E Design that Drives Operational Value
Rather than focusing only on efficiency metrics, our team prioritised Lidl’s real-world outcomes
– energy stability, reliability, and customer comfort.
Key value-driven solutions included:
- A highly responsive HVAC strategy that matches ventilation to actual occupancy, reducing unnecessary energy use and creating a consistently comfortable shopping environment.
- A 575 kWp PV array designed to meet 100% of the store’s annual electrical demand, protecting Lidl from long-term energy price volatility.
- Integrated building management systems that unify refrigeration, heating, cooling, and lighting into one optimised energy ecosystem.
- Smart lighting design balancing daylight and LED technologies to improve shopper experience and reduce operational costs.
Our early-stage digital modelling ensured that Lidl knew exactly how systems would perform before construction ever began, minimising risk and delivering confidence to all stakeholders.
2 – Sustainability Strategy That Reduced Embodied and Operational Carbon
Lawler Sustainability supported Lidl in embedding environmental performance across the full project lifecycle, ensuring the store met the strict standards required for BREEAM certification.
We helped Lidl achieve:
- Reduced embodied carbon through the reuse of stone from the original store, recycled concrete, and low-impact glulam timber.
- Enhanced biodiversity onsite through curated landscaping and pollinator-friendly planting.
- Future-ready transport infrastructure including EV and micro-mobility charging.
- Rainwater harvesting systems to reduce potable water requirements.
Every decision balanced environmental integrity with Lidl’s operational and commercial priorities.
Challenges We Solved for Lidl
1 – Achieving Net Zero Without Compromising Operations
Through integrated engineering and sustainability planning, all systems were designed to work together—not in competition—ensuring efficiency gains did not affect performance or reliability.
2 – Protecting the Client from Rising Energy Costs
By maximising onsite generation and minimising demand, Lidl benefits from predictable, stable long-term running costs.
3 – Ensuring a High-Quality Customer Experience
Enhanced lighting, indoor air quality, and thermal comfort all contribute to an improved in-store environment—supporting staff wellbeing and increasing dwell time.
4 – Providing Transparent, Evidence-Based Performance
Post-occupancy monitoring and reporting validated that the store’s net zero targets were achieved, improving stakeholder trust and supporting Lidl’s continued sustainability communications.
Collaboration & Project Delivery
From the outset, we worked closely with Lidl, the design team, contractors, and suppliers to coordinate complex systems and maintain quality across all stages. Our early modelling insights, clear communication, and proactive problem-solving ensured the project stayed aligned with Lidl’s brand, sustainability goals, and retail ambitions.
Outcome: A Replicable Blueprint for Sustainable Retail
The Maynooth store has become a benchmark for the Irish retail industry, proving that operational and environmental performance can coexist without compromise.
For Lidl, the project has delivered:
- A 100% renewable energy-operated supermarket
- Major reductions in energy and carbon
- A comfortable, modern retail environment
- Long-term protection from energy price instability
- A scalable model for future net zero stores
For Lawler Consulting, it stands as a powerful demonstration of what integrated M&E design and sustainability consultancy can achieve when aligned with clear client objectives.
