Steris – Applied Sterilisation Technologies (Synergy)

Steris is a global provider of contract sterilisation and microbial reduction services to the pharmaceutical, medical device, and industrial industries.

Lawler Consulting was appointed as the services consultant for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lift, and sprinkler services across a phased delivery of an ambitious expansion plan over the course of 3 years.

A tight delivery program was agreed to facilitate impending BREXIT implications and a large number of specialist sub-contractors were active on the site at Steris. The facility was handed over to the client in September 2019 on the programme for process qualification.

Phase 1 –Electron Beam Building 2017

The Steris project consisted of a new warehouse unit with a process sterilisation unit of approximately 1,910 square meters. Lawler Consulting provided detailed design, tender process management, construction, and cost management of all MEP and sprinkler services. All services combined a mix of extension of existing site services and installation of new, including services provisions for client-supplied specialist process equipment.

Phase 2 & 3 –Ethylene Oxide Sterilisation Building & Laboratory Building (Oct 2018 to Oct 2019)

This project consisted of a new warehouse unit of approximately 4,090m² and a new 2-story lab facility of 850m². The building consists of a new warehouse for goods in/out with a link corridor to the existing facility, 8 loading bays, new back of house office facilities, steam boiler house, process ATEXzones, service yard, and associated facilities and gas distribution facilities.

The 2-story lab building includes general lab areas, ISO cleanrooms, canteen, and sanitary facilities. The building has extensive tie-ins to existing site facilities and all works were completed in a live environment with no downtime for the existing facility.

Lawler Consulting provided detailed design, tender process management, construction, and cost management of all MEP, lift, and sprinkler services.

The service provisions were a mix of new infrastructure and extension/tie-ins to existing site services. A focus of the project was the provision of services for client-supplied specialist process equipment to very detailed criteria in both the lab building and the processing warehouse.
