As part of the Department of Education and Skills Rapid Build Delivery Programme 2017 – 2019, one of the projects (Lot 9) was the Coláiste an Chláirín, Athenry, Co. Galway which required 11,356m² of a new building and associated external facilities to be constructed to accommodate 1,000 pupils.
Clarin College
Lawler Consulting was appointed to provide building services and sustainable design and manage the project from inception to completion within a 16-month timeframe. We designed a single-sided natural ventilation strategy with the aid of Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) to verify and demonstrate the design through simulation modeling along with working closely with the Architect to develop the form of the building to optimise the natural ventilation strategy.
The Clarin College design approach ensured a cost-effective building in terms of initial capital cost as well as ongoing energy and maintenance whilst ensuring excellent indoor air quality and comfort levels. The build was further supplemented by a robust mechanical and electrical design that met all current legislation with respect to schools, including disabled access, means of escape requirements, and improving sustainability to achieve an A3 Building Energy Rating.
The engineering services also incorporated low energy design, including High Efficiency, LPG Condensing Boilers, Rainwater Harvesting, Building Management Control Centre, Daylight Dimming Control & High-Efficiency Lighting, C02 Monitoring, Site-Wide CCTV.
