Kilkenny County Council Sustainable Masterplan Scheme

Development of an Energy Strategy for the proposed re-development of the former Smithwicks Brewery site and it’s adjoining lands in Kilkenny City.

Energy Strategy
Kilkenny

Kilkenny Local Authorities made a decision to purchase the site of the brewery from Diageo. The overall site which measures approx. 19 acreas was purchased with a view to job creation and the development of public amenity areas on the site. The objective for the site was “to develop a new low carbon energy strategy for the masterplan and to advance the provision of near zero energy buildings on site”.

Our energy strategy produced innovative and cost effective design solutions especially in regard to renewable technology, these included:-
 Solar Photovoltaic Installs
 Hydro
 Bio-Energy Lid
 Centralised Heat and Power (CHP)
 Public Lighting
 Demand Side Management
 Renewable Heat Sources
 District Heating Network
 Ventilation
 Energy / Heat Strategy for Individual Buildings

Our strategy also contained the evaluation of each of our proposed options in the context of site restrictions which include Archtectural Conservation Area, Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area and also Flood Risk Assessment.
